For centuries, western culture has sought to demystify and control nature. Today no corner of the earth is unaltered by technology, yet despite great increases in knowledge our understanding of the natural world is far from complete. Nature remains beyond our control, infinitely complex and enigmatic. The fragility and resilience of nature, its order and chaos fascinate me. In earlier work, I depicted vast spaces often choosing materials for their tactile qualities or their reference to processes. In recent years I have focused on the microcosm of the forest floor, tangled undergrowth, and the cycle of growth and decay. |
